GENERAL SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Sow's Ear Poetry Review welcomes submissions of poetry and art. Our special features are Crossovers, marrying art and language, and group submissions by a Community of Poets to the Editor, Janet Harrison. The Sow's Ear accepts online general submissions. Send these to sowsearsubmit@gmail.com. [We prefer doc or docx for poems, with the poet's name in the file name.] For mailed submission or queries, email the editor at SEPReditor@gmail.com.

POETRY: Sow's Ear Poetry Review welcomes submissions of fine poetry in any style and length.  We want work that is carefully crafted, keenly felt, and freshly perceived.  We like poems with voice, specificity, delight in language, and a meaning that unfolds.

Send up to five poems with a brief bio in a single doc or docx, whose file name includes your last name. Each poem should begin on a new page. Simultaneous submissions are allowed, if you quickly inform us of acceptance elsewhere.  Poems are eligible if they have never appeared in a journal or online, and you hold rights.  If they have been published in a book or blog, please tell us where they have appeared.  Poems receive more than one level of screening, but we strive to respond within three months.  We send 2 contributor copies of the issue on publication, and all rights revert to you at that time. If you submit via post, include an SASE - message the editor for more information.

COMMUNITY OF POETS: We sometimes feature works by a Community of Poets.  Feel free to define "community" in any creative way.  It might mean a mentor with proteges, fellow members of a workshop, poets from a shared region, a set of friends, or a group joined by a common interest or condition.  Send 3-5 poems from each poet.  We might select only a few poets to represent the community.

ART: We feature artwork from all media on our cover and alongside the poems.  The art is not an illustration, but an equal companion to the poetry.  We are skilled at converting the images from color to black and white, in which we publish.  Send up to 5 representative, high-contrast images by e-mail or on CD.  We prefer JPEG or TIFF files at 300 dpi.  Supply a brief bio. Art submissions should be sent to our Visual Arts Editor, Kristin Camilla Zimet.

CROSSOVERS: For our Crossover feature, we look for works that marry poetry to other media.  Some examples: musical settings of poems (please include written permission from the composer and poet), art that incorporates words, prose/poetry partnerships, etc.  Surprise us!

NEW VOICES: It is not a requirement to have published previously.  We publish fine poems no matter the age or experience of the poet, although we aim SEPR at adult writers and readers.

OTHER FEATURES: We print occasional features that stretch our understanding of poetry, for example: interviews with poets or essays.  Send queries to SEPReditor@gmail.com. Use this e-mail address for book reviews, as well.
